Why Choose Schapman for Auto Insurance Savings?

By Madison Schapman · · 4 min read

Shopping for auto insurance usually goes one of two ways: you spend an evening filling out forms on five different websites, or you renew the same policy you’ve had for years and hope the price is still fair. There’s a third option that most drivers around Lapeer County haven’t tried — letting an independent agent do the shopping for you.

What “independent” means for your rate

Schapman Insurance Services isn’t tied to one insurance company. A captive agent can only quote you their company’s price; we compare options across multiple carriers and bring you the best combination of coverage and price we can find. When your situation changes — a new driver in the house, a new truck, a move — we can re-shop the market at renewal instead of you starting from scratch.

That’s the honest version of “savings”: not a gimmick, just more companies competing for your business through one local office.

Michigan auto insurance, briefly

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means your own policy pays certain benefits after an accident regardless of who caused it. Michigan drivers also choose their level of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical coverage — a decision that meaningfully affects both your protection and your premium, and one that’s worth talking through with a real person rather than guessing at a dropdown menu.

Beyond the required coverages, the big building blocks are:

  • Liability — pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Michigan’s minimum limits are low relative to what a serious accident actually costs, so this is the last place to pinch pennies.
  • Collision — pays to repair your own vehicle after an accident. Michigan has a few flavors (broad, standard, limited) that trade premium against out-of-pocket cost — another spot where a five-minute conversation prevents a bad surprise.
  • Comprehensive — covers theft, fire, glass, and the deer that seem to own the roads around Dryden and Metamora in November.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist — protects you when the other driver has too little insurance, or none.

Where drivers commonly overpay (or under-protect)

  • Carrying state-minimum liability on a household with a home, savings, or a business to protect. If you have assets, you need real limits — and often an umbrella policy, which costs less than most people expect.
  • Full coverage on an aging vehicle where the premium no longer makes sense against the car’s value. Sometimes dropping collision is the right call; sometimes it isn’t. It’s worth doing the math.
  • Not bundling. Most carriers price auto better when it’s written alongside your home, farm, or renters policy. Since we handle all of those lines, we can quote the bundle properly.
  • Set-it-and-forget-it renewals. Rates drift. If your policy hasn’t been reviewed in a couple of years, there’s a decent chance you’re paying for the privilege of not asking.

The local difference

When something goes wrong — a crash, a cracked windshield, a question about a bill — you call or text a person who knows your name, not a phone tree. We live here, we drive the same roads, and we’re in the office on Main Street in Dryden Monday through Friday.
